"But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men."
Philippians 2:7

In Philippians chapter two we are exhorted to do nothing from selfish ambition and empty conceit. With humility we are to regard one another as more important than ourselves, and to not look after our own personal interest, but also the interest of others.

As we read on we come to the epitome of humility as Christ left us the example of Himself. He was the Son of God, yet He emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant and became obedient to death on a cross, the ultimate humiliation of that time.

My human nature is very contrary to His example. It is such a contradiction to what comes natural for all of us. The only way I can fulfill the desire to be like Him is to love Him with all my heart, body, soul, and strength. I find as I focus on developing that relationship above all, I slowly develope a desire to please Him more than myself. That is what true love is. We learn it from Him. As I experience His unconditional love for me, my love for Him grows greater than the love I have for myself.

He is delivering me from striving to make a reputation for myself rather than for Him. As I allow Him to increase, I decrease, and I can sing with Casting Crowns:

Only Jesus

And I don’t want to leave a legacy
I don’t care if they remember me
Only Jesus
And I, I’ve only got one life to live
Let every second point to Him
Only Jesus

May we all allow Him to conform us to His example of how to live life. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life…only Jesus. Jesus is the only name to remember.
In His love.

May our heart’s cry be for God the Father to reveal the LOVE of JESUS displayed by the reminder of the cross.
