"He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but he who walks wisely will be delivered." Proverbs 28:26

How many times have you been told by well meaning family and friends to trust in your heart? Do whatever is in your heart. Just let your heart guide you. I have had that counsel throughout my life. Very few, if any times was I given the counsel of truth found in the word concerning the heart. Unless we have allowed God to be on the throne of our hearts and His love for us, and allowed His Word to dwell in our hearts, we are not to follow our hearts. Only fools do that as Proverbs tells us, because we are acting out of emotions of our flesh that wars against the Spirit. When we base our decisions on what we think and feel is right, we will miss the will of God for our lives, and we will live our lives in deception doing what we sincerely believe is right while missing the heart of God. God’s heart is holy, righteous, and just, always far superior to His creation. Unfortunately I am describing the majority of professing believers today within and without the church. To be a true disciple of Christ, He must have first place in all things. He must be the Lord of all areas of our lives; not compartmentalized, so we can continue to do as we please when we please.

Jeremiah 17 has a lot to say concerning our hearts. In 17:5 we read:

"Thus the Lord says, "Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind, and makes flesh his strength, and whose heart turns away from the Lord."

Jeremiah 17:7 declares:

"Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose trust is the Lord."

Jeremiah 17:9-10 states:

"The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it? I, the Lord search the heart. I test the mind, even to give to each man according to his ways, according to the results of his deeds."

I encourage you to read and study Jermiah 17. Now let’s go to Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 15:16-20:

Jesus said, "Are you still lacking in understanding also? Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is eliminated? But the things that proceed from the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulterers, fornicators, thefts, false witness, slanders. Those are things which defile the man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man. "

Once again we see religion focusing on unwashed hands rather than the root of all sin that comes from within. Jesus was challenging them with absolute truth. He searches the heart and mind of man. He deals with who we really are – not what we pretend to be, as He was here.
Proverbs 4:23 instructs us:

"Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flows the springs of life."

Our hearts require an unchanging standard. That standard must be the word of God. It is the absolute truth we are to follow – not our own hearts. We are to hold to the absolute truth of Hebrews 4:12:

"For the Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two edged sword and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do."

These verses reveal to us there is nothing but the absolute truth that is alive and active, and can only be found in the Word of God to make our hearts pure, true, just, and righteous. Our input will be our output of what we hide in our hearts. Our own hearts will deceive us if we are left with our sin nature leading. We cannot do what we think is right. The people perish in sin if we do what is right in our own eyes. We must hold to a standard of unchanging truths that can only be found in God Himself.

May we all heed the Proverb, and not live as fools trusting in our own hearts that are filled with lies and deception when left to ourselves. We all are in desperate need of the truths found in God’s Word to deliver us from our folly. Let us not be of those who shrink back in shame at His coming, but can honestly take delight in knowing all wrongs will be made right by the One true righteous Judge.
In His love.
