But like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, "You shall be holy, for I Am holy." 1 Peter 1:14

I have become quite taken with the word "holy" as I am seeking personal revival in my life at this time. The meaning of the root word holy in Hebrew simply means set apart. It comes from an old English word halig, meaning "blessed." There is a relationship between holy and being whole, and when viewed in a religious sense it is developed from keeping believers spiritually whole — and pure.

Today in the church you don’t hear the word holy used very often. It is a foreign thought to most of us that as followers of Christ we are to pursue a holy life and are commanded to be holy by God Himself as He is holy. Peter tells us to be holy in all our behavior. If you are like me I know all too well how unholy I am left to myself. But as always the Holy Spirit reminds me it is through Christ I become holy. We will never succeed trying to follow rules, but as we love Him with all our heart, body, mind, and soul we will choose to please Him resulting in living holy lives. In John 14:15 we read:

"If you love Me, you will keep my commandments."

What motivates me to love God is allowing Him to reveal to me His love for me. I encourage you to do the same. I John 4:19-21 declares:

"We love Him because He first loved us."

In the previous verses 16-17 we read:

We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this, love is perfected with us…

To summarize I believe holiness results from being consumed by God’s love for you. So… what does consume your thoughts lately? If we abide and meditate on God’s love for us we will reciprocate that love back to Him. Out of that love evolves a holy life. We will be consumed by whatever we love and give our time and thoughts to. Let us purpose in our hearts to experience the perfect love that is available for all, and become holy as He is holy in order for a desperate world to see something different in us who are set apart for His glory.
In His love.
