"For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. No wonder, for even satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguises themselves as servants of righteousness whose end will be according to their deeds." 2 Corinthians 11:13-15
An apostle was sent out to teach the gospel of Christ to the churches. Here we read in Corinthians there were many deceitful workers disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. Then he reminds us that satan himself disguises himself as an angel of light, so of course his servants do the same. So I propose a question to each follower of Christ: How will you know the difference?
Previously in verse 3 we read:
"But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ."
So where does our devotion lie this morning? Is it to a ministry, a pastor, an organization, or to worship and gifts, or prophecy more than hearing from the person of Christ? If so you are open to deception.
In 2 Corinthians 10:12 Paul states:
"For we are not bold to class or compare ourselves with some of who commend themselves;but when they measure themselves by themselves, and compare themselves by themselves, they are without understanding."
Discernment and true understanding is a result of a pure and simple devotion to Christ and Christ alone. It is not a religion or denomination. It is in a personal relationship to our Lord. May we all examine our hearts honestly to find a true answer to what we are truly devoted to. Anything other than Christ Himself leaves us open to the great deceiver and his servants who disguise themselves as apostles within the churches.
Let us heed the list of Paul’s duties for us in 1 Thessalonians 5:20-22:
"But examine everything carefully, hold fast to that which is good; and abstain from every form of evil."
